I'm the bloke behind Michael Evans Media — a one-man digital studio in Rockhampton helping small businesses stop throwing money at marketing that doesn't work.
WHY I STARTED THIS
I started Michael Evans Media because I got sick of watching good Central Queensland businesses get burned by bad digital marketing. You know the story. A local cafe, a trades business, a beauty salon or a family-run shop signs up with some slick-looking agency — usually from Brisbane or interstate — pays thousands of dollars a month, and gets back a vague monthly report full of vanity metrics and absolutely nothing they can take to the bank.
I've worked in and around small business marketing for years. I've sat in the rooms where the decisions get made, and I've seen the invoices. I've also built websites, run socials, managed ads and written copy across about every industry you can think of. What I kept noticing was a gap. Big agencies were too expensive and too slow. Freelancers on marketplace sites were cheap but hit-and-miss, and good luck getting them on the phone. Nobody was doing straight-up, skilled, accountable digital marketing for the kind of small businesses that make up the backbone of Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Emerald and everywhere else in the Central Highlands.
So I built one. Just me, doing the work properly, for people who want honest answers and actual results.
MY PHILOSOPHY
Marketing is not magic. It's a set of decisions — about who you're talking to, what you're saying, where you're saying it and how often. Most of the businesses I work with don't have a marketing problem. They have a clarity problem. Once we sit down and get clear on the basics, the rest starts to move.
I don't believe in buzzwords, growth hacks, or the idea that you need to be everywhere all at once. I believe in picking two or three channels, doing them really well, and measuring what actually happens to your bookings, enquiries and sales. If something isn't working, we change it. If it's working, we double down. That's the job.
I also believe in telling you the truth — even when it's not what you want to hear. Sometimes the honest answer is “your website is fine, you just need to post more regularly.” Sometimes it's “no amount of Instagram will fix your sales process.” I'd rather give you an honest diagnosis and lose the sale than take money for work that won't move the needle.
THE ROCKHAMPTON CONNECTION
Rockhampton is home. I know the area, I know the businesses, and I understand what it's like to try and grow something in a regional city that gets ignored by Brisbane-centric thinking. Central Queensland has its own rhythm. People here buy from people they trust. Word of mouth still matters. The local Facebook groups still matter. Being seen at the markets, the expos and the community events still matters. You can't just copy-paste a capital-city marketing playbook and expect it to work out here.
That's one of the biggest advantages I bring to clients. I'm not coming in from a Sydney co-working space with a spreadsheet full of demographic assumptions. I'm around. I understand the difference between what plays in Rocky versus what plays in Yeppoon versus what plays in a grazing town out west. That local context finds its way into every line of copy, every piece of content, every ad we run.
WHO I WORK WITH
I specialise in small businesses — typically 1 to 20 staff — in trades, hospitality, health and wellness, beauty, retail, professional services and local ecommerce. My clients are usually the owner. They're busy, they can't afford to waste money, and they want to deal directly with the person doing the work. No account managers. No endless email chains. Just the two of us figuring out what moves the business forward this month.
I'm based in Rockhampton but I work with businesses across Central Queensland — Yeppoon, Gladstone, Biloela, Emerald, Mackay — and right around Australia. Most of the work happens remotely, but if you're local I'm happy to meet for a coffee and walk through what's going on.
WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT
- You deal with me, not a team. Every call, every email, every deliverable comes directly from me. No handoffs, no juniors cutting their teeth on your account.
- I only take on a handful of clients at a time. I'd rather do great work for a small group than mediocre work for a big one. It also means my availability is limited — if I say yes to you, you're genuinely a priority.
- No lock-in contracts. Everything is month-to-month with 30 days' notice. I earn your business every month or you walk.
- Full-stack digital. I build the website, run the socials, write the copy and handle the strategy. Instead of stitching together three different providers, you get one coordinated approach.
- Plain-English reporting. Every month you get a short, clear update on what I did, what it cost, what changed, and what we're doing next. No 40-page PDFs nobody reads.
SOLO OPERATOR — BY DESIGN
A quick note on the team thing, because people ask. I'm a deliberate solo operator. I've had chances to hire and scale up, and I've chosen not to — at least for now. The reason is simple. The minute I start hiring, my job shifts from doing the work to managing people doing the work, and the quality drops while the price goes up. Plenty of agencies run that model and it works fine for them. It's just not what I want to build.
If a project genuinely needs specialist help — a particular type of video production, legal copy review, a developer for a custom integration — I bring in trusted collaborators I've worked with before, and you know about it up front. No hidden subcontracting.
QUICK CLARIFICATION
“Are you the photographer?” No. Michael Evans Media is a digital marketing studio — websites, social media, SEO and paid ads. There's a photography business that shares part of my name and people sometimes mix us up, but we're unrelated. If you're after portraits, weddings or commercial photography, you want a different Michael Evans. If you're after a website that converts, a social media presence that brings in real enquiries, or an ad campaign that actually pays for itself, you're in the right place.
